Las piezas que conforman la exposición, son el resultado de una investigación realizada en diversas regiones del norte, centro y sur de Chile, por medio de la búsqueda de códigos culturales locales aplicados a objetos representativos de la cultura global. En una primera instancia, se registraron ciertas prácticas de conservación y reutilización de envases desechables plásticos, como soporte de distintas funciones como cebo para insectos, bebederos para animales, delimitación de espacios, maceteros, protección de antenas y medidores o inclusive siendo usados para dar forma a un rito en animitas y cementerios.
En una segunda instancia se distribuyeron en estas mismas localidades moldes de estos envases, para que artesanos traduzcan sus formas y modelos industriales con los materiales y técnicas de las artesanías tradicionales de cada zona tales como: roca volcánica, madera de cactus de Toconao, lapizlázuli de Ovalle, piedra de Pelequén, mimbre de Chimbarongo, Crin de caballo de Rari y arcillas de Pomaire, Vichuquén y Quinchamlí. Con este gesto de traducción, se propone reflexionar en torno a las formas de vida y el desarrollo en función de la cultura global, el territorio y la identidad.
LOCAL TRANSLATION was an investigation developed in different regions of Chile, which focused on local cultural codes applied to objects of the global culture. In a first stage, this work involved the study of the creative uses of recycled plastic bottles across the country. Some of these included insect traps, water containers for animals, delimitation of property, flowerpots, antenna protections and roadside shrines in death rites and cemeteries.
In a second stage, plaster models of plastic containers were given to local artisans for them to reproduce them with their own traditional techniques and materials, such as volcanic stone, cactus wood, lapizlázuli stone, Pelequén stone, fibers and clay. Local Translation reflects upon the lifestyle of the global culture and the development of consumption in contrast to local practices and territorial identity. The intervention of these plastic bottles in the landscape was spread throughout every locality in the country, even the most remote ones. By adopting the material of the landscape, these objects seek to reflect upon the ways in which craftsmanship tries to imitate the forms of the industrial, making the artisanal similar to the industrial, since the industrial also resembles the manufactured. In this encounter and convergence of distant universes as constructive matters, a series of fissures are evidenced; anomalies typical of the translation work, exceptional moments that are a metaphor of other anomalies produced in different areas, in which local cultural logics rub against the global economic apparatus.
